PARTS OF SPEECH - DEFINITIONS AND EXAMPLES:

1. A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place,
thing, and abstract idea.
Examples: people, Heather, teacher, school, comfort, tired
2. A pronoun takes the place of a noun.
Example: he, she, it, you, which, none, they, me, her, him, us, them
3. A verb tells what the subject does.
Example: look, run, bark, shout
4. An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun by describing,
identifying, or quantifying words.
Example: blue, pretty, large, loud
5. An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree.
Example: quickly, loudly, boldly, slowly
6. A conjunction joins individual words or phrases.
Example: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet
7. A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other
words in a sentence.
Example: about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at,
before
8. An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey
emotion.
Example: Oh no, Ouch, Hey

A phrase is a group of two or more linked words without a subject and predicate.
A predicate is that part of a sentence that contains the verb.
A sentence contains a subject and a predicate.
